Fighting to end slavery
2007 is the bicentenary of the abolition of slavery in the UK. However, people still live in slave-like conditions in the UK today.
Freedom is something most people take for granted but sadly, for many domestic workers brought into the UK from overseas, it is little more than a cherished dream.
Thousands of foreign domestic workers in the UK work in horrific conditions, being treated in a way no human being should have to endure. Some are made to sleep on the floor, or in the garage. If they are lucky enough to get any food they are fed scraps. They are often denied permission to leave the house and are insulted, beaten and even raped by their employers.
The following statistics were taken from a sample group of 1,000 foreign domestic workers (from 21 nationalities) about their treatment from their employers (representing 37 nationalities) source KALAYAAN/CFMW:

We are working to end this abuse. Our partners provide a drop-in centre with legal and practical advice.
The centre gives women the tools to escape from their employers by offering them an alternative life. The women are given help to find new employment and safe houses so stay in until they find their new home. Many of these women also need extensive counselling in order to fully reintegrate back into society. Our partner even has to retrieve passports that the abusive employers have confiscated.
In order to teach about UK society the centre offers a variety of courses designed to teach domestic workers about their rights in the UK and its culture as well as English classes.
These women have experienced the worst in humankind. With our help they are able to regain their confidence, regain their self esteem and feel human again.
